University of Nairobi Human Development Index Discussion
ANSWER
- Data Gathering:
- You are assigned Egypt, which is part of the Arab Mediterranean group.
- You will use the socioeconomic indicator data for life expectancy for the year 2017 from the provided slides (Section I slides, slides 19-27).
- You also need to download the population data for the year 2017 from the World Development Indicators.
- Collect Data:
- Let’s assume Egypt’s population (P_Egypt) in 2017 is 100 million.
- From the socioeconomic indicator data, let Egypt’s life expectancy (LE_Egypt) in 2017 be 72 years.
- Calculate Population-Weighted Average:
- As per the example you provided, you need to compute the population-weighted average using the formula: Population-Weighted Average (X) = [P_Egypt / (P_Egypt)] * LE_Egypt
- Plugging in the values, you get: X = [100 million / 100 million] * 72 years = 72 years
- Explanation:
- In this case, since you only have one country (Egypt) in the Arab Mediterranean group, the population-weighted average for life expectancy for the Arab Mediterranean is the same as Egypt’s life expectancy (72 years).
- Table Representation:
- You can represent your computation in a table as follows:
Country Population (P) Life Expectancy (LE) Weighted Contribution Egypt 100 million 72 years [100 million / 100 million] * 72 years = 72 years
Remember that this is a simplified example for illustration purposes. In your actual assignment, you would need to repeat the steps for the assigned country and indicator, and if there are multiple countries in the group, you would include their data and calculate the weighted average accordingly.
QUESTION
Description
THE HUMAN DEVELOPMENT INDEX COMPUTING A POPULATION-WEIGHTED AVERAGE
Question
Reproduce the value of the HDI in HDI 2018 for one of the 22 countries we study. HDI 2018 is in the Assignment materials module on Canvas. (We cover 23 countries, but Somalia has no value for HDI because of missing data.)
- Compute a population-weighted average for life expectancy, mean years of education, or GDP per capita for one of the three Arab worlds.
The TA will randomly assign you one of the 22 countries and one of the three socioeconomic indicators. You should compute the population-weighted average for that indicator for the Arab world to which your assigned country belongs. If you are assigned Iran, compute the population-weighted average for the Arab fuel -endowed countries. If you are assigned Turkey, compute the population-weighted average for the Arab Mediterranean.
To reproduce the value of the HDI for your assigned country, you should show your work exactly as in slide 6 of the Section I slides or page 8 of the textbook. Your HDI value may differ from the one in HDI 2018 in the third decimal place due to rounding error.
To compute population-weighted averages, use the socioeconomic indicator data for the year 2017 in slides 19-27 of the Section I slides. To find the population weights, download population data for the year 2017 from the World Development Indicators. The reasons for using population-weighted averages and an example are in Box 1.5 in the textbook (pages 23-24). Show your complete computation as in the following example:
Suppose there are 3 countries in the country group with populations P1, P2, P3 and they have values of the socioeconomic indicator x1, x2, x3. Let P = P1+P2+P3 and call X the population-weighted average.
Make a table showing P1, P2, P3 and x1, x2, x3, and write out the computation [P1/(P)]x1 + [P2/(P)]x2 + [P3/(P)]x3 = X.
