Title: Navigating Higher Education: Experiences of Transgender Students
I. Introduction
In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of and advocacy for the rights and well-being of transgender individuals. However, one area that still requires significant attention is the experiences of transgender students in higher education. This paper explores the challenges and triumphs faced by transgender students as they navigate the complex landscape of higher education. Drawing from scholarly research and insights from personal interviews, this paper will shed light on the unique hurdles and strategies employed by transgender students to succeed in academia.
II. Plan for Completing the Assignment
To complete this assignment, I will undertake a comprehensive analysis of the literature on the experiences of transgender students in higher education. I will search for scholarly peer-reviewed journals, academic books, and relevant articles to thoroughly understand the challenges they encounter and the strategies they employ to navigate the educational system successfully. Additionally, I will interview transgender students to gather firsthand accounts of their experiences and insights into the issues they face. This mixed-method approach will provide a well-rounded perspective on the topic.
III. Readings to Support the Analysis
a. Schilt, Kristen. (2010). Just One of the Guys?: Transgender Men and the Persistence of Gender Inequality. In “Feminist Frontiers” (9th ed.), edited by Verta Taylor and Nancy Whittier. McGraw-Hill Education.
Kristen Schilt’s work delves into the experiences of transgender men and provides valuable insights into the persistence of gender inequality. This reading will help contextualize the challenges faced by transgender students within broader gender dynamics.
b. Grant, Jaime M., et al. (2011). National Transgender Discrimination Survey Report on Health and Health Care. National LGBTQ Task Force.
This report presents findings from a national survey on transgender discrimination, including discrimination in educational settings. It will provide empirical data to support the analysis of challenges faced by transgender students.
c. Meyer, Elizabeth J. (2015). Gendered Harbors: Transgender and Queer Communities at Women’s Colleges. Rutgers University Press.
Meyer’s research on transgender and queer communities at women’s colleges will be valuable in exploring the experiences of transgender students in unique academic environments.
d. Personal Interviews with Transgender Students
To complement the scholarly literature, I will conduct personal interviews with transgender students. These interviews will provide firsthand accounts of their experiences, challenges, and strategies for success in higher education.
By combining insights from academic literature and personal interviews, this paper aims to contribute to understanding how transgender students navigate higher education and provide recommendations for creating more inclusive and supportive academic environments.

Please choose ONE of the following options for your final paper:

1. Interview a professional who works directly with people who identify as

women/trans/nonbinary/queer. Construct questions theoretically informed by course readings.

For example, what are the key challenges that people they work with face? How do they help

others to achieve their goals? What kind of success and/or struggles have they experienced?

2. Research an organization that works on gender-related issues (e.g., Brave Space Alliance,

Chicago Abortion Fund, Assata’s Daughters, Sarah’s Inn, Chicago Foundation for Women,

Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health, Between Friends, Incite!). Analyze their mission, vision,

programs, and services. What issues do they focus on? How would you evaluate this

3. Analyze a feminist/women-led movement. What are the goals of the movement? What

strategies do participants use to advance their goals? What challenges do they face?

4. Research an issue that we did not cover in class, or only reviewed minimally. Think of the

issue like a research question. For example, how do transgender students navigate higher

education? As you write, include relevant literature, useful data, and recommendations for

In addition to our class readings, you should include at least two outside sources in your analysis.

One of these sources can be from the popular press (e.g., New York Times, Rolling Stone,

Atlantic), but the other must be from an academic journal or book. Your paper should be 5 pages,

double spaced.
