A safety professionals’ responsibilities are to plan and coordinate safety initiatives. They are also responsible for putting safety initiatives into action and assessing their effectiveness. Safety professionals also create regulations and procedures. They also set work priorities and uphold the mechanisms necessary for the success of safety activities. These professionals should also be conducting safety training programs, assessing their efficacy, and leading briefings as well as training sessions for other trainers are other responsibilities of the role.
In order to create a safe and healthy workplace, it is the responsibility of the safety professional to advise management on best practices, how to maintain compliance, and how to inspect the work area. Whenever a safety practitioner knowingly violates or disregards OSHA and safety rules, they should be held accountable. When they are aware of events occurring, they should be held accountable for negligent recordkeeping and a lack of incident investigations.
In my fire service career, I have only dealt with w few safety professionals. The role of the safety officer is rather new to the fire service. While they have been around for a while, they are really expanding their coverage to handle more than just firefighter scene safety. They currently handle many of our preventative care. I believe they play a vital role and the result of this program for me is to fill this position.
