Title: Promoting Positive Social Change Through Doctoral Research in DBA

Introduction: As a DBA independent scholar at Walden University, my research is guided by the institution’s mission of positive social change. In this discussion, I will describe the business problem I have identified for my doctoral research, explain its significance with support from scholarly literature, and demonstrate how addressing this problem can contribute to positive social change within the field of research and the specific business industry.

Description of the Doctoral Research Business Problem: The business problem identified for my doctoral research revolves around the increasing need for sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the fast-fashion industry. The problem is two-fold: First, the fashion industry is notorious for its detrimental environmental and social impacts, including excessive waste, poor labor practices, and exploitation. Second, consumers are becoming increasingly aware of these issues and are demanding more sustainable and ethically produced fashion products. This problem presents a significant challenge for businesses in the fast-fashion sector, as they must balance profitability with sustainability and ethical concerns to remain competitive and relevant in today’s market.

Significance of the Business Problem: The significance of this business problem can be understood by drawing from scholarly literature:

  1. Environmental and Social Impact of Fast Fashion: Research has shown that the fast-fashion industry is one of the major contributors to environmental degradation and exploitative labor practices (Fletcher, 2013; Fletcher & Tham, 2019). The production of cheap, disposable clothing has led to pollution, excessive resource consumption, and harm to workers’ rights and well-being. This highlights the urgency of addressing these issues.
  2. Consumer Awareness and Demand for Sustainability: Consumer behavior in the fashion industry is shifting. Studies have shown that consumers, especially millennials and Gen Z, are increasingly concerned about the environmental and social impacts of their clothing choices (Niinimäki et al., 2019; Joy et al., 2012). This consumer demand for sustainable and ethical products is disrupting traditional business models.

Promoting Positive Social Change: Addressing the identified business problem in the fast-fashion industry aligns with the mission of positive social change in the following ways:

  1. Environmental Stewardship: By researching and implementing sustainable practices, businesses can reduce their environmental footprint. This not only benefits the planet but also sets an example for other industries, contributing to broader environmental stewardship efforts (Luke & Chu, 2013).
  2. Ethical Labor Practices: Investigating and advocating for ethical labor practices within the fashion industry can lead to improved working conditions and fair wages for workers, ultimately enhancing social justice.
  3. Consumer Empowerment: Providing consumers with transparent information about the sustainability and ethical aspects of fashion products empowers them to make more informed choices. This, in turn, puts pressure on businesses to adopt responsible practices, fostering positive change within the industry.

In conclusion, my doctoral research on sustainability and CSR in the fast-fashion industry addresses a pressing business problem with significant societal implications. By promoting sustainable and ethical practices, it contributes to positive social change in both the research field and the fashion industry, aligning with Walden University’s mission of effecting meaningful social impact.
