SU Week 9 Comparing Erasmus and Luther on Reform Discussion
ANSWER
Hello Kimberly,
Great post! You provided a clear overview of Erasmus and Luther’s views on reform, highlighting their differences and contributions to the Reformation. I find it interesting how Erasmus initially supported reform but distanced himself from Luther as the movement evolved. It’s a testament to the complexity of the religious and intellectual landscape during that time.
You mentioned that Luther believed in the central authority of the Bible and salvation by faith rather than deeds. This shift in theological perspective indeed had profound implications for the Catholic Church and Christianity as a whole.
Regarding the printing press, you pointed out its role in making the Bible more accessible and in standardizing language and knowledge. This technological innovation played a crucial role in disseminating Luther’s ideas and challenging the established religious order.
You briefly touched on Luther urging German princes to reform Catholic churches, which is an important aspect of how he succeeded in his reform efforts. It’s fascinating to see how political alliances and support from the German nobility played a role in shaping the Reformation.
Great job on your response!

RE: Week 9 Discussion
This Week‘s Assignment we were asked to compare Erasmus and Luther on Reform in My investigation I found out that Erasmus was very skeptic He shaped his attitude toward reformers for years. He gave his qualified support He distanced himself from the reformation movement in the 1920s after he saw Luther openly defy Catholic authorities. He was thought of as a Christian Humanism. he was a biblical scholar who supported Humanistic call. he returned the texts in original languages and promoted the study of the biblical languages Hebrew-, greek, and Latin.
Luther view in 1517 Luther penned a document attacking the Catholic churches corrupt practice of selling indulges. to absolve sin His two beliefs is that the bible is the central religious authority and humans may reach salvation only by their faith and not by their deeds. Martin Luther’s ideas changed the course of religious and cultural history in the west.
The roles of the printing press; the role of the printing press was to write the bible more quickly and it increased knowledge easier and also helped with the standardized knowledge grammar and spelling easier.
