After reading chapter 1 and learning about the stages of development, I believe early childhood is the most important period in development. During this stage, the child is learning many workings of physical world. At the same time, the child is busy learning to speak, gaining independence, and starting to learn things that are socially acceptable. I believe, like John Locke, that adults teach children important knowledge during this time. I also believe that environment and social status are key factors in the developing mind and behaviors. A child growing up in a poor, lower class home will have many different tendencies, ideas, behaviors, and social standards when compared to a child who was born into a wealthy family. These two classes of people have very different standards and ways they approach different situations. These things are mostly learned from the parents, if any, and the environment in which they reside. This is why I believe early childhood is the most important stage for the developing mind.
