My current lifestyle has some very good aspects to it but also could be much better. I will start with my physical lifestyle first. I try to be active, by going to the gym at least 2 times a week when I’m not hurt. I attend water classes, like aqua Zumba or aqua fitness classes. These are great since they are low-impact and don’t hurt my joints as I have had injuries to my ankle, wrist, and back in the past. I stay active as well by taking care of my son and taking walks with my husband. Still, I know I need to do better in increasing my activity and losing weight. I eat pretty healthy but can always do better. My husband recently has been experiencing some sugar issues so we are learning to cook with fewer carbs and more meats and vegetables. I go to the doctor regularly and get regular dental and eye care. I do not drink alcohol or smoke so I have good habits in that regard. I do not participate in risky behavior.

My family life is stressful. Raising a special needs child is not for the faint of heart. I have some very good coping strategies to keep from becoming overwhelmed and to de-stress. I am sure to use the respite hours I receive to do something for myself when I need it. I also have a close group of church ladies I talk to regularly to find strength and joy on a weekly basis. I read scripture and take time to meditate and pray and this helps me deal with life stress. I help my husband in his ministry at church and with that comes a lot of stress as he interacts with people regularly. He struggles with being overly concerned for other people’s welfare. I schedule time for him and me to have regular breaks, date nights and planning time so we don’t get overloaded with life demands. I schedule family away time on a semi-regular basis so we don’t get burnt out or too worn. We use the hot tub to destress and enjoy family time together.

I am known as a workhorse, sometimes working too hard for too long. I struggle to enjoy downtime and relaxing as it seems nonproductive and wasteful at times. I am learning to enjoy these moments more though it is still difficult for me. I smile at my life and at the future. I do know I have a very good life and my circumstances, though not perfect, are truly blessed. I look at the future with excitement, and anticipation though there are many unknowns. I’m excited for what might come and what adventures God has in store for me.

I’m already in middle adulthood, but I believe my current lifestyle will have some consequences in my late adulthood stage. Because I have been physically injured, I don’t think my late adulthood stage will be an as healthy or active time for me. I hope that I will physically be able to keep up with my hopes and dreams. I hope to change some of my physical lifestyle choices, like losing some weight and becoming more physically active so I can stay physically strong for longer periods of time in the future.
