Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge and Chelmsford Risk Management Social Science Worksheet

ANSWER

Task Description: For this risk assessment, I have selected the task of “Welding in a Manufacturing Facility.” I chose this task because welding is a common industrial process with inherent risks, and it involves multiple steps that can be analyzed for hazards.

Task Steps and Hazards:

  1. Preparation of Work Area:
    • Hazard 1: Fire Hazard due to flammable materials and gases.
    • Hazard 2: Electrical Hazard from welding equipment.
  2. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Setup:
    • Hazard 3: Personal Injury Hazard if PPE is not worn correctly.
  3. Welding Operation:
    • Hazard 4: Respiratory Hazard due to welding fumes.
    • Hazard 5: Burns and Eye Injuries from welding sparks and UV radiation.

Risk Assessment (Before Control Measures):

For each hazard, we will estimate the likelihood, severity, and risk rating using the Risk Matrix:

  • Hazard 1: Likelihood (L) – Moderate, Severity (S) – High, Risk Rating (RR) – High
  • Hazard 2: L – Low, S – High, RR – Medium
  • Hazard 3: L – Low, S – Moderate, RR – Low
  • Hazard 4: L – Moderate, S – Moderate, RR – Moderate
  • Hazard 5: L – Moderate, S – High, RR – High

Proposed Risk Reduction Tactics:

  1. Preparation of Work Area:
    • Control Measure: Store flammable materials away from welding area and provide proper ventilation.
    • Reassessment: Likelihood – Low, Severity – Moderate, RR – Low
  2. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Setup:
    • Control Measure: Conduct PPE training and regular checks.
    • Reassessment: Likelihood – Low, Severity – Low, RR – Low
  3. Welding Operation:
    • Control Measure: Use proper respiratory protection and welding screens.
    • Reassessment: Likelihood – Low, Severity – Low, RR – Low

Risk Assessment (After Control Measures):

  • Hazard 1: L – Low, S – Moderate, RR – Low
  • Hazard 2: L – Low, S – High, RR – Medium
  • Hazard 3: L – Low, S – Low, RR – Low
  • Hazard 4: L – Low, S – Low, RR – Low
  • Hazard 5: L – Low, S – Moderate, RR – Low

Discussion:

Before implementing control measures, several hazards posed significant risks. However, by introducing safety measures such as proper storage, PPE training, and respiratory protection, most risks have been reduced to acceptable levels. The remaining moderate risks can be further addressed through continuous monitoring and improvement of safety protocols.

The organization should take the next steps to ensure that employees are well-trained in these safety measures and that safety practices are consistently enforced. Regular safety audits and hazard assessments should be conducted to identify and mitigate new risks as they arise. Additionally, ongoing employee education and a culture of safety awareness are essential for maintaining a safe work environment during welding operations.

QUESTION

Description

In this assignment, you will conduct a complete risk assessment (RA) for a task of your choosing. You will put your answers on the. form provided. It will provide you an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of the risk assessment process as discussed up to this point in the course.

  1. Select a work task you are familiar with for which the risks can be assessed. The task must be representative of an industrial work process, not a task you would do at home or around the house. The task must have at least five steps and five distinct hazards to address. Each step does not have to have a hazard associated with it; some steps could have more than one hazard. Just be certain you are evaluating at least five hazards in all. The level of detail in the task steps is up to you. (Note: A tire-changing operation is not a suitable task choice because this task was used in the Unit VI assignment).
  2. Click here to access the form to document your risk assessment, staring with a description of the process or task. In the description, include the reasons why you selected the task. List the task steps in order, and identify the hazards at each step. Using the Risk Matrix on page 283 of the textbook (there is a color version in the Unit VII Study Guide), estimate the likelihood, severity, and risk rating for each hazard.
  3. Propose one or more risk-reduction tactics for each identified hazard. Reevaluate the likelihood, severity, and risk rating for each hazard after control measures are implemented.
  4. In the Discussion section of the form, discuss the reasoning you used to assign the likelihood and severity of each hazard before and after controls were implemented. Provide your conclusion by summarizing which risks were reduced to acceptable levels and which ones require additional controls. Comment on the next steps that the organization needs to take regarding this task. The discussion must be at least 300 words in length.ou will put your answers on the. form provided.
