Requirements: Pick a topic from the list below and write a 6-page minimum paper (does not include cover page, abstract, and resources) thoroughly analyzing the factors related to inequality and discrimination. You should notice that each of options are connected to other work you’ve already completed over the semester. You may use small sections from previous assignments as well as relevant sentences and quotes to help build the framework of your paper. This doesn’t mean copy/paste chunks what you’ve already written into a new document, add in some fluff, and call it a day. You need to strategically incorporate the
information you already gathered and wrote about into this paper. It needs to be altered to specifically address the purpose and focus of this paper, which requires more depth and exploration into the main topic as well as the smaller subtopics that connect to your main focus (topic). You need to synthesize and condense some of pieces of what you previously wrote to make it applicable to the specifics of this assignment. Your paper should be concise, beautiful (APA style headings, subheadings, etc.), and flawless (i.e. punct/grammar, APA style guidelines, citations and references…). It should clearly demonstrate what you have learned over the semester. The best way to achieve this is to use numerous course materials as well as reliable resources you independently selected (which follow the standards for reliable resources). You are expected to deeply analyze the core issues that tie the theme (inequality) to the topic to subtopics. The paper is about inequality. That’s the theme. The topics are primary areas that represent certain types of inequality. The subtopics beneath the main topic are examples that create the framework that supports your analysis of your chosen topic, You have more than enough resources to adequately cover the background information for your paper, but you need to further independently explore some of the required subtopics. YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST FOLLOW THE STANDARDS FOR RELIABLE RESEACH! If you choose information that does not qualify, regardless of its accuracy, you will likely fail this assignment. You will lose a minimum of 15 points per unqualified source. Be careful. INSURRECTIONIST, SEDITIONIST, VIOLENT EXTREMEST GROUPS, EXTREMIST HATE GROUPS, AND WHITE NATIONALIST BEHIND THE CAPITOL ATTACK Examine the connection between members of extremist hate groups to some politicians and other highprofile people that appeared to be cooperating in organizing the attack on the Capitol. Discuss the how these connections are reflective of issues of racism, classism, gender/LGBTQ, non-Christian religion, antiimmigration, etc. at the most powerful and influential level (lawmakers, etc.) You need to examine the specific groups that were involved before, during, and after the attack. Discuss the ideology of the groups (Oath Keepers and Proud Boys are the most prominent ones but look for others as well) that were/are involved (racism, sexism, anti-lgbtq, etc.). Make sure you clearly explain the differences between hate groups, extremist groups, and violent extremist groups. Discuss the difference between seditionists, insurrectionist, rioters, and other types of participants in the attack. Election Conspiracy and inequality • “Attack on democracy” • The “big lie” • Attempt to over through the elections • alleged conspiring members of congress o Senator Graham’s call to GA secretary of state o Representative Paul Gosar, Andy Biggs Jim Jordan, Scott Perry, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and others • Other federal and state government officials o State senate and house representatives promoting election conspiracies, abusing their political power to force state actions that promoted the “big lie” ? Fake electors and falsifying documents related to affirming Biden as president. ? AZ “Fraudit” and other state’s that followed along • threats against election administrators. Remember, elections are run at the state level. o threats against state election officials (secretary of states in GA, AZ, etc.) o Threats against Governors (attempted abduction of MI gov.) o threats against election workers (volunteers) • Prominent media talking heads promoting the “big lie” o Fox -Tucker Carlson, Shaun Hannity, Lora Ingram, etc. o Fox’s massive (almost a billion-dollar settlement with Dominion) settlement. ? Discuss what we learned about the inner workings of fox and what they knew about the election • Popular podcaster and social media o Alex jones, Steve Banon, etc. o Newsmax • Other people in power o Influential promoters of election lie (wealthy people, political organization, etc. oh! and the My Pillow guy). 2. POLITICAL ACTIONS IMPACTING VOTING RIGHTS PRE AND POST INSURRECTION You are expected to discuss the types of politically motivated actions that members of both state and federal officials have taken to impede the rights of non-white citizens. It’s important to try to include the impact on other marginalized groups such as gender, class, disability, etc. Also, don’t focus only on the impact on Black voters, Hispanic and Latinx as well as indigenous people will be significantly impacted as well. Attacks on undocumented immigrants allegedly illegally voting is often used to propagandize fears over voter fraud. This ultimately aims to suppress the vote of Hispanic and Latinx persons, regardless of citizenship or immigration status. The list below is only a few of the moves that have been made to impact minority voting. There are others you are welcome to include, but these are the minimum you need to touch on. You also need to thoroughly discuss the tactics and motivations behind the push to change voting laws. Discuss the promotion of conspiracy theories and disinformation/misinformation campaigns adding fuel to the fire of social divisiveness, division, and inequality. There is quite a few directions to go with, so just pick a few that most closely connect o redistricting o gerrymandering o shutting down voting locations, limiting voting times, and/or moving voting locations away from public transit routes and other nasty ways to block certain types of voters from being able to vote o Ending early voting o Blocking mail in ballots o Additional I.D. restrictions and the hyper-paranoia of undocumented persons voting (review how many overall arrests for voter fraud have occurred since the election and who was doing it. FYI, it’s very few, if any). o Other politically motivated legal actions aimed to suppress voting rights focusing on who is being targeted to have their vote suppressed (race, class, gender, etc.) o Political conspiracies and actions as part of the “big lie” and other attempts to overthrow the election, sow distrust in the legitimacy of our elections, disenfranchise minority voters, ? “Fraudit” ? Fake electors Falsifying documents ? Other actions supporting the big lie, and election conspiracy ***Include information on how many investigations, arrests and convictions have occurred since the elections throughout the US. It’s not that easy to find but use what you can. 3. COVID AND UNEQUAL ACCESS TO REAL INFORMATION, TESTING, MEDICAL CARE, EMERGENCY HEALTHCARE SERVICES, AND VACCINE AVAILABILITY Discuss the unequal access to information and resources that disproportionally impacted racial minority groups leading to more infections, less medical care, and ultimately more deaths. Examine Immigrants separate from other racial minorities. Analyze the reasons behind the disparity in protection (i.e. lack of reliable information, availability and use of masks, social distancing, multicultural domestic norms, etc.), detection (testing- public transportation access), and treatment (vaccine and monoclonal antibody treatment). Also, examine other areas of inequality such as gender, age, class (determined by location, rural, urban, wealth of state they reside), etc. Use this as a basic guide for information you need to develop your paper. Discuss recent social conflicts and frustrations such as attacks on LGBTQ+ rights, ending access to reproductive rights, etc. A few directions you may want to pull in are things like the role of media in fanning the flames for ratings (left and right). For example, option 4 … COVID AND EQUAL ACCESS TO REAL INFORMATION, HEALTHCARE AND HEALTH SERVICES) Section IV: Discuss the more precise details related to your topic • Integrate the more specific concepts and examples related to the main topic of your paper. (FYI, these are the subtopics listed under the larger theme. For example, if your larger theme is covid and equal access, this is where you will discuss the bullet points). Section V – Conclusion: Restate your thesis statement, briefly recap what you discussed, and wrap up.
